CNS provides an indulgent piece concerning the ongoing "reform," of the Movement, which has now moved from the Legion and 3gf/m's to the rank and file of Regnum Christi. Concerning the long process, the Delegate explains:
He said the delay was partly due to the fact that his attention was directed first to "larger problems," the "less beautiful part" of the movement. In fact, his work began with the leadership and constitutions of the Legion and the consecrated members. He called the unconsecrated lay branch "a very beautiful part" of the movement, in addition to being the largest part.
"Regnum Christi is a reality much wider than the Legion," the cardinal said.
Repeatedly over the past several months, the cardinal has referred to the Legionaries of Christ as part of Regnum Christi, rather than vice versa, and members of both groups have echoed that description.
How nice, and yet what nonsense. The Legion existed for years before Regnum Christi, and the latter was created to recruit and fundraise for the former. Years of testimony on this page alone have illustrated the Legion's priorities, which did not concern the well-being of RC members, but how those members could serve the Legion, no matter the personal cost.
But here we have more pandering, which has been a tremendous reason many love the Movement: that the Legion hierarchy strokes their egos and reminds them that the Kingdom hinges on their fidelity to Maciel's construct. The Delegate should know better and work to break that spell, but for some reason he perpetuates the symbiotic relationship on MM's terms.
Well, this Mexican article, offers a glimpse into the reason, and why the reform which is underway will be ineffectual in changing the essence of this beast.
Everyone knows that Marcial Maciel Degollado's vocation was dedicated to spiritually molesting little children and youth, among others, but little is known of another side of the man with the unique talent to create a multinational, diversified, complex, multimillion dollar financial organisation, which made the Legionaries of Christ a virtual financial mafia. Here are the data, dates, names, quantities, of that great financial network whose power remains almost intact.
The secrecy that surrounds finances prevented outsiders from knowing the size of the economic power of the Legionary order. Until now.
Internal documents of the Legion and official reports of the Ministry of Finance obtained by emeequis begin to shape the diffuse cloud: the Legionaries of Christ in Mexico receive [millions of] dollars annually through their schools, foundations, estate and companies--in Mexico alone. [Number doesn't translate--help needed]
And a good portion of these funds are tax-deductible donations raised through 55 organizations "philanthropic" educational and realtors who are born of the Legion of Christ (see attached table) and extend everywhere.
That fifty Legion organizations received donations for almost 4 thousand 500 million pesos in the period 2009-2012, according to official reports of the Ministry of Finance submitted in response to requests for access to information.
So the business group of Legionnaires won thousand 125 million pesos a year on average, up from sales of 24 of the 500 largest Mexican companies listed by Expansion in 2012.
The article provides many details, which explains why rewriting the Constitutions, statutes and norms is only a gloss. As long as the Legion exists--with its nefarious aims--having the window dressing of beatiful people with earnest smiles and innocent motives is the exact cover needed to carry on the darker plan.
Returning to the CNS piece:
Kerrie Rivard, a 38-year-old representative from Atlanta, repeated an idea the cardinal and members have been affirming for years: the spiritual gift, or charism, that led to the founding of the Legion and Regnum Christi "was given to the church, not the founder."
"Father Maciel didn't live up to the charism, but a lot of others -- as Legionary priests, as lay people -- have lived up to it," she said. The founder's actions left "wounds in the church, in the Legion and in Regnum Christi that need healing and reparation."
But Rivard said she thought Cardinal De Paolis had done a good job of explaining why she's still a member and committed to Regnum Christi's reform: "The history of the church isn't to throw out the good with the bad, but to purify it."
"That really resonated with me because it's sometimes frustrating, very frustrating," to try to explain to people, she said.
Rivard said she still is friends with many people who have left the movement. "The hurt is real -- it's there," she said, and she listens to them, apologizes for anything she may have done personally to cause them pain and looks at their experiences "so we don't make the same mistake in the future."
"That is part of our renewal," she said.
Ah, you see? She means well, so that is projected onto the whole group. But that is nonsense. We are engaged in a Church-wide renewal called "the New Evangelisation." EVERYONE is on task to bring the Gospel to the world. The Movement has yet to explain its charism or what it brings that is essential/specific/and unique to their program of renewal. The singular feature of the Movement, sadly, is its relationship to a mafia-like program that is essentially a weed hiding amongs the lilies.
I understand Ms Rivard's frustration, but perhaps she should step away from the methodology just long enough to pray with sincerity--to discover whether she is being used by others who don't share her innocent enthusiasm for souls.
ADDENDUM: just an added thought. The Legion is sitting on millions, and yet if you could only see the driveway of the 3gf house in Rhode Island. A plethora of potholes and disintegrating pavement that threatens to destroy all vehicles. It has been in this pathetic state for years. Appalling -- and yet one, tiny illustration (among many!) that shows that RC is not quite the reason for the Legion's existence.
